Hidden Falls Regional Park: A Hiker's Paradise in Placer County

Updated: 6 days ago

If you're craving an escape into nature but don't want to stray too far from the comforts of home, Hidden Falls Regional Park is the perfect retreat. Tucked away in Lincoln wine country, this 1,200-acre gem has quickly become my go-to hiking spot offering peace, adventure, and a chance to recharge in the great outdoors. .

Whether you prefer easy strolls or challenging climbs, Hidden Falls has over 30 miles of trails that meander through lush forests, serene creeks, and—of course—the park's stunning namesake waterfall. And if you're lucky, like we were, you might just have the trails to yourself for most of your hike!

For a real adventure, take the Seven Pools Vista Trail, where breathtaking views of the falls await. And don’t forget to bring your camera—you’ll want to capture the vibrant wildflowers, curious deer, and majestic red-tailed hawks soaring overhead.

Getting There:

Two convenient routes lead to this serene escape:

  • A winding drive through Lincoln wine country (perfect for scenery lovers)

  • A less winding route via Highway 80 through Auburn (ideal for those prone to car sickness)

The drive through Lincoln wine country is beautiful and I had no idea how many wineries are nestled throughout the hills, but for those of you (like me) who get easily car-sick, the route through Auburn might be your better option. It is still a very pretty drive!

Trail Experience:

As you step onto the trails, you're immediately enveloped by nature's embrace. Towering trees, rustling leaves, and the gentle sounds of creeks create a tranquil atmosphere. On our recent visit, we were lucky enough to have the trail almost entirely to ourselves for the first half of our hike.

We chose the North Legacy Trail to South Legacy Trail loop, a rewarding 7-mile round trip. Most of the trail was wide enough that we could walk side-by-side, with only part of the hike narrowing to allow single-file walking. For those seeking a challenge, I highly recommend the Seven Pools Vista Trail, which offers a stunning overlook of the park's namesake waterfall.

Park Features:
  • 30+ miles of trails: Whether you're hiking, running, biking, or even horseback riding, there’s a trail for every adventurer.

  • Diverse difficulty levels: Trails range from easy walks to more challenging hikes, so there’s something for everyone, no matter your skill level.

  • Waterfall viewpoints: Two observation decks give you the perfect view of the park’s 30-foot waterfalls—definitely a spot to snap a photo!

  • Riparian habitat along several creeks

  • Picnic areas: After your hike, grab a bite at one of the rustic, shaded picnic spots. It’s a great way to soak in the park’s serene atmosphere.

  • Swimming and fishing access

  • Dog-friendly (leashed pets welcome) - We can't wait to bring our dogs once the weather cools down!

Wildlife and Flora:

As you explore the park, keep your eyes open for the incredible wildlife that calls Hidden Falls home.

  • Birds: Red-tailed hawks, California Quail, Western Meadowlark, golden eagles, wild turkeys, woodpeckers

  • Mammals: Deer, coyotes, bobcats, raccoons, rabbits

  • Reptiles and Amphibians: Western Pond Turtles, Western Toads

  • Fish: Salmon in the creeks

  • Wildflowers: California poppies, lupines (best viewed in spring)

On our hike, we were lucky enough to spot several deer and a few bevy of Quails!

Planning Your Visit:

Ready to explore? Here are some tips to ensure your trip is as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Hours & Fees:

  • Open year-round from sunrise to sunset.

  • Parking fee: $4 for a partial day, $8 for a full day (sunrise to sunset).

When to Visit:

  • Best season: Spring! Spring transforms the park into a living painting and is the best time of year to visit. The waterfalls roar with newfound energy, and the hills burst into a sea of vibrant wildflowers, from brilliant poppies to deep purple lupines.

Other Tips:

  • Pack a lunch and enjoy the shaded picnic spots along the trail.

  • Spring is the best time to visit, when waterfalls are at their peak, and wildflowers like poppies and lupines are in full bloom.

Essential Tips:

Finally, here’s everything you need to know before you head out.

  • Bring plenty of water (creek water is not safe for consumption)

  • Wear sunblock - there was inconsistent and minimal shade coverage along the paths that we took.

  • Stay on designated trails

  • Be cautious of rattlesnakes and ticks

  • Lace up your sturdy hiking boots

  • Don't forget your camera!
